PRICE WILLIAM

8 07 2007

William set to be our royal at the FO

PRINCE WILLIAM is planning to do a stint as a civil servant in the Foreign Office as he casts around for a fulfilling long-term role.

He is being lined up for a desk job in Whitehall, to start after he leaves the armed forces, likely to be towards late 2009.

The plan, being finalised by palace officials, comes after a period of uncertainty. Earlier this year William split with his girlfriend, Kate Middleton, before reportedly taking steps recently to rekindle their relationship.

He suffered a snub when John Howard, the Australian prime minister, made it clear he would not be welcome in the ceremonial post of the country’s governor-general. Howard said the job should be given to an Australian.

Like his father, the Prince of Wales, William faces the prospect of waiting for decades before becoming king and is said to feel unsettled as contemporaries pursue careers.

Courtiers say he is eager to take a highly structured approach to his preparations for his future role as monarch. “[The Foreign Office job] will give him a grounding in the workings of departments which will one day act in his name,” one palace in-sider said.

“It is an ideal element in his continuing preparation for kingship. It could also be beneficial to constructive relations between the government and a future heir.”

William is expected to complete another 18 months in the army, serving as a troop leader in the Household Cavalry. At the moment he is on a tank commander’s course at Bovington in Dorset.

While William has enjoyed elements of his time in the army, it has never been considered a long-term career. One of his circle said: “He is never going to be as committed to the army as his brother. At Eton the cadets were never a passion for him.”

In 2009 he will train with the Royal Navy and the RAF, where he will learn to fly. He will then become a civilian and will be in need of a job.

His clearer “career” map coincides with a renewed closeness between William and Middleton. Last Sunday she was seen sitting in the royal box at the Concert for Diana at Wembley and the couple were later photographed at the after-show party enjoying a cocktail together.

There was speculation this weekend that Prince Harry is concerned William and Kate may rush to marry if they do get back together.

William gained a measure of financial independence on his 25th birthday last month, when he became legally entitled to an income of at least £250,000 a year accrued on the money left to him in his mother’s will. She left £13m after inheritance tax.

The prince’s planned Foreign Office placement could be followed by another civil service post in Whitehall, according to a senior royal source. It would be the first time a future monarch has worked as a civil servant.

In 2012 William will be 30 and it will also be the Queen’s diamond jubilee. In that year, courtiers expect him to take on a full round of royal engagements.

Some courtiers have also discussed the possibility of him taking over responsibility for The Prince’s Trust, created by his father.

There have been several discussions in the royal family about William’s future and it is thought the possibility of him being made governor-general of Australia emerged from those talks.

William’s desire for the post was reported by Tina Brown, the former editor of Vanity Fair, in her biography of Diana. Brown claims William had discussed the possible role with his father.

Prince Charles himself had expressed a wish to serve in the same post but this was rejected by Bob Hawke after he became prime minister of Australia in 1983. William’s ambition has been similarly rejected by Australia’s political leaders, with Kevin Rudd, the opposition leader, saying it would be “party, party, party” if William were ever given the post.

Howard, the premier, has said: “I do think the practice of having a person who is an Australian in every way and a long-term and permanent resident of this country is a practice I would not like to see altered.”

However, monarchists have pointed out that because William is destined to become the head of state, it does not make sense to deny him the post of governor-general, representing the monarch.

In a statement the group Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, which was successful in the 1999 referendum campaign to keep the monarchy, said: “The appointment of Prince William would be very popular and attract international attention.”

It also branded Rudd’s comments as disrespectful, saying the outspoken opposition of leading republican politicians had ensured it would not happen.

Last week Charles was a guest at the Foreign Office where he met David Miliband, the foreign secretary, but it is not known if William’s placement was discussed. A Foreign Office spokesman declined to comment, and Clarence House officials said it was too early to comment.

Rowling Said One Chapter Made Her Cry

At Least Two Characters Will Die in Potter Book Finale

Author J.K. Rowling has penned the last word of her popular “Harry Potter” book series, and she told the BBC that after seven books, she is burnt out.

“I just want to take a break. I really do,” she said.

Rowling has said that two characters die in her final book, due out July 21, and fans are wondering if Harry Potter himself might be one of them.

Rowling had been tight-lipped about the final chapter in the book series until now. The author said she broke down as she was writing what she knew would be the final chapters of her final book.

“I didn’t cry when I finished,” Rowling said. “But there’s a chapter towards the end that I absolutely howled. It was, unbelievable.”

It’s the end of a spellbound era. Rowling’s tales of magic and muggles have captivated readers since the first Harry Potter book was published a decade ago. The series has been a phenomenon with 325 million copies sold worldwide in 65 languages.

The big screen versions of the books have done extremely well, too. Five of the seven titles have been made into major motion pictures starring Daniel Radcliffe as Potter.

Radcliffe was a child actor when the series started. Now he’s aged along with all the other kids in the early episodes.

Even though Rowling has completed the book series, Potter fans still have some things to look forward to. The fifth Harry Potter film, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” comes out July 11. Two more films will be released in the next few years. A Harry Potter theme park will open in Florida in 2010

Potter spin-off a hit for tiny Berkeley publisher

Prediction book capitalizes on Pottermania

Few would have expected that the name Ulysses Press — a small, independent Berkeley publisher — and the phrase “335,000 copies in print” would ever be used in the same sentence.

But it has happened: The publisher’s “What Will Happen in Harry Potter 7,” by authors from the No. 1 Harry Potter fan site, MuggleNet.com, has been on the New York Times Children’s Paperback best-sellers list for 20 consecutive weeks.

The book can be found around the world, thanks to unabated Pottermania, which is surging in anticipation of the seventh and final Harry Potter volume from author J.K. Rowling, due for release July 21.

Ulysses Press was founded in 1983 with the publication of “Hidden Hawaii.” It publishes 50 books a year, including a variety of titles on alternative health, fitness and spirituality, from a second-story office in South Berkeley.

For Ulysses, a successful book sells about 50,000 copies. “What Will Happen in Harry Potter 7,” with retail sales of five times that number, took in some $5 million, representing about a $2 million gross for the press.

“We were a $2 (million)- to $3 million-a-year publisher before it came out. But this book alone has brought in that kind of money,” said Ray Riegert, the 60-year-old publisher who founded Ulysses with his wife, Leslie Henriques.

A Harry Potter spin-off might seem like an odd fit for Ulysses. But the book’s runaway success reaffirms Ulysses’ practice, unusual in publishing, of developing its own ideas and finding authors to write them. No literary agents are involved and no authors show up at the door bearing manuscripts.

Early last year, Riegert, along with Bryce Willett, the company’s marketing manager, and Nick Denton-Brown, an editor, concluded in a brainstorming session that they would do a “prediction book” capitalizing on the Harry Potter phenomenon.

Denton-Brown had the task of finding an author. He found a chat room full of them at MuggleNet.com. The Web site is named for muggles, or people, as Rowling has reminded us time after time, who have no magical abilities.

The Web site, where all things pertaining to Harry Potter can be mined, was founded by Emerson Spartz, a 20-year-old junior at the University of Notre Dame, in the fall of 1999, when he was 12.

Spartz and Ben Schoen, a 17-year-old recent high school graduate from Moundridge, Kan., are the lead writers of “What Will Happen in Harry Potter 7,” which is an analysis of the first six books and a prediction of the series denouement in the seventh book.

Is Dumbledore really dead? Will Harry and Ginny get back together? Who is the mysterious R.A.B.? Whose side is Snape truly on? This is the stuff of the Ulysses Press book, which is being promoted largely through personal appearances by Spartz and Schoen.

“It’s a new Holiday Inn Express every night,” Spartz said from Los Angeles on Friday. A business major from LaPorte, Ind., he said his goal is to run businesses, not make a career out of Harry Potter. But he remains fascinated with the books — “a wonderful story with characters you fall in love with.”

Schoen this year applied to Notre Dame and was rejected. In his appeal he included a copy of the book, a copy of the New York Times review and a clipping of the newspaper’s best-seller list. Notre Dame reversed its decision and welcomed him with a letter congratulating him on his achievements at such a young age.

Riegert, who says other projects with MuggleNet.com are being discussed, is still marveling at Ulysses Press’s good fortune.

“We had no idea it was going to be like this,” he said.

For years, Ulysses mainly published travel guidebooks, but it has varied its titles in the past 10 years. Long a two-person operation, the staff has now grown to 12.

Another successful title for the company, “What Would Buddha Do,” has sold about 60,000 books since it was released in 2002. The MuggleNet.com book has shipped five times that in just eight months, Riegert said.

“There is phenomenal interest” in Rowling’s creation, “one of the biggest publishing phenomena of the last 25 years,” he said. “People are really keyed up, especially for book seven, because everything is going to be resolved.”

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Days after U.S. college student Shira Barlow got her new cell phone number, the party inquiries, birthday wishes and late-night calls started arriving.

Barlow had unwittingly inherited the old phone number of celebrity hotel heiress Paris Hilton — and messages from well-wishers and foes alike are still flooding in five months later.

Barlow told the Los Angeles Times in a story published on Friday that the calls and text messages — usually coming between about 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. on weekends — at first were mostly from people asking about cool Los Angeles nightclubs.

But in May they were replaced by condolences after the 26-year-old socialite was sentenced to jail for violating probation in a drunken-driving case.

“People were scared for her,” the UCLA student told the newspaper.

Barlow said she has resisted the temptation to pose as Hilton to get herself and her friends on the guest lists of exclusive parties.

She also said she has no plans to switch the number because it has been more a source of amusement than a hassle.

She inherited it in February under a practice in which U.S. phone companies recycle old cell phone numbers after six months to meet increasing demand, the Times said.

The newspaper stumbled on the story after a reporter called the number, hoping to reach Hilton, and Barlow answered.

Hilton spent three weeks in a county jail near Los Angeles last month. Her incarceration ignited a worldwide media frenzy and debate about celebrity justice.

OOPS ANOTHER BREAK-UP

ANISTON AND BRITISH MODEL ‘BREAK UP’

Jennifer Aniston

JENNIFER ANISTON is starring in her own real life BREAK UP once again, it seems, with speculation that her whirlwind romance with British model PAUL SCULFOR has come to an end.

The pair were apparently seen having a major row while at dinner at Santa Monica’s Shutters on the Beach restaurant.

A witness at the restaurant told Us Weekly: “They seemed to have had a disagreement. Jen stared Paul straight in the eyes and crossed her arms against her chest.”

Friends of the couple suggest that the 36-year-old model has been finding the relationship too full-on, with rumours that the media attention was getting to him.

The Brit has reportedly left Los Angeles to stay in London for two weeks in order to get away from it all.

Despite media reports having suggested the pair were getting serious, a source downplayed the status of their relationship.

“Jen and Paul were friends and remain friends. They will probably go out for dinner again sometime,” the source said.

“There was no drama. They had a couple of dinners and hung out – it was never more than that.”

This is Not News: AL GORE’S SON BUSTED, NICOLE RICHIE NOW EATING FOR ONE, DIVORCE RUNS IN THE HOLLYWOOD FAMILY

Just because dumbass celebrities do dumbass things doesn’t make it front page, or even back page, news.

Published 7/5/2007

We here at iF despise the Hollywood gossip rumor mill. With self-sustaining gossip Web sites cropping up in droves, it makes us wonder where America’s journalistic priorities actually are. However, we do realize that the American public is extremely interested in some celebrity news and the basic fare is fine and dandy. However, when mainstream news is chock full of stories on Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Sanjaya Malakar (and his hot sister) and Britney Spears rather than all hell breaking loose in the Middle East or gas prices soaring through the roof despite oil prices lower than they were a year ago, we have to question the priorities of our news organizations (not to mention these dastardly gossip Web sites). Welcome to the latest edition of: Thisis Not News.

GOING REALLY GREEN

Looks like Al Gore’s son was busted on the 4th of July and found in possession of not only a slew of legal (yep, legal) prescription drugs, but with a spot of ole Mary Jane in his car. This isn’t the first time that Global Warming’s first son has been busted for pot either as he was arrested back in 2003 for possession as well
